This year's feature exhibit

Virginia Frederic Large

Virginia Fredrick Large began her independent painting career in earnest when she moved to Saratoga in 1941, upon her marriage to William Large. Here, in the valley, Virginia painted everything from landscapes to commissioned works. She initially gained the attention of valley residents with her remarkable ability to match the colors of the landscape. Virginia didn ’t just paint however. She ranched with her husband and offered art classes. From these classes Virginia encouraged her students to discover their own style of painting, just like she had. While a talented painter Virginia lived in an era of prejudice against female artists. In order to sell her paintings for more money, and avoid the stigma faced by female artists, Virginia signed her paintings VFredrick. Virginia is estimated to have creating around 500 paintings, a few of which you see here. Even with such a large, and well enjoyed, body of work Virginia Fredrick Large is almost unknown to individuals outside of the Upper North Platte Valley.
